Major Themes in Fight Club
The two major themes in Fight Club are Masculinity and Anarchism. Having been raised by their mothers, Tyler and the narrator both believe that they have become feminized. Also, Tyler believes that materialism is feminizing everyone by making them satisfied with material goods. He hopes to change all this through the fight club where he will be able to release the primal instincts of men through violence and blood shed. Similarly, he hopes to bomb the corporate industries in an attempt to have his followers feel the power that they still have over the corporate world. This leads to the second theme of anarchism and nihilism. Tyler believes that the higher class are all cancers that must be eliminated in order for society to be corrected. He creates Project Mayhem for the sole purpose of making an army that will rebel along with him against all the higher class to make society change into a way that he sees fit. Everyone in Project Mayhem has faced some sort of hardship at the hands of someone such as a boss or a company and now wishes to exact their revenge. They believe that they will only be able to exact this vengeance by following the free and smart Tyler Durden. Lastly, Tyler has everyone believing that life is pointless and that there are no such things as gods and principles. Everything should be done for the moment and that at this moment, the Corporate world is ruining their lives.
