Plot Summary
Fight Club features an unnamed narrator who suffers from insomnia, working as a product recall specialist. His stressful job and the jet lag he suffers from the frequent business trips causes the narrator to seek treatment from a doctor who advises him to visit support groups to relieve him of some of the stress. Our narrator attends some support groups and temporarily finds relief and achieves some sleep until he meets Marla Singer, whom is also a fake attending these support groups. He is reminded that he is also a fake and so begins feeling the symptoms of insomnia once again. This forces him to confront Marla and create a truce that both attend different groups such that they never meet each other again.
The chapter changes and the narrator meets an individual named Tyler Durden while on a nude beach. Tyler seems like the perfect man to the narrator and after his condo is blown up, the narrator chooses to move in with Tyler. Tyler asks for one thing in return which is to punch him in the face as hard as he can. They fight it out and this altercation eventually leads to the creation of fight club. The fight club attracts a lot of men and soon the fight club seems to have grown far greater than the narrator ever anticipated.
Two new rules seem to have been implemented such as that only two men will be at the center of the fight and that fight club will always be free of charge. Along with these changes, Tyler begins a relationship with Marla who called the narrator in the middle of the night threatening to commit suicide. Tyler instead picks up and saves Marla and they both develop an uneasy relationship which the narrator does not like. The narrator begins to wonder whether Tyler and Marla are the same person as he never sees one or the other at the same time.
After fight club's unprecedented fame, Tyler takes advantage to change the club into something he can use to change society as a whole with his anti-consumerist ideas. Individuals that wish to join Project Mayhem, his new "club", must first prove themselves to him by waiting three days on front of his house, and if they are still there, he allows them to come inside and basically "join" his club where they do chores and make soap.
After the narrator's buddy Bob,from the testicular cancer support group, is killed during one of the many sabotage operations of Project Mayhem, he decides to stop the whole operation. He attempts to confront Tyler by finding out where he has gone but is baffled when he realizes that Tyler is his alter ego. He learns that Tyler becomes active when he sleeps and so makes a plan to have Marla watch over him when he falls asleep. Also, he finds out that Tyler blew up his building and that he is not planning to blow up a museum. Tyler plans to sacrifice himself to achieve this and the narrator tries to stop him. However, they are the same individual which allows Tyler to already know what the narrator is thinking. As they make their way to the rooftop where everything will end, Marla shows up and the bomb does not go off as it malfunctions. Tyler vanishes and the narrator chooses to end his life by shooting himself through his mouth. This however fails and he wakes up in an mental hospital believing that he is in heaven.
The book ends with the confrontation of the narrator and Project members who reveal that they expect Tyler to be back and that their plans have not stopped.
